Have you heard of Character Counts?
They have a very unique way of teaching the young about the importance of building good characters. This time they are teaching through a "Grow Your Character Bookmarks" science project.
In each bookmark there is a seed-embedded "pot" which the children can put in the soil to grow. The children involved will be given handouts showing the life cycle of a plant. There is also a table to print out to note down observations of the growth. This teaches children how to take responsibility of what they grow.
As the children learn through the experiment that plants need sunlight and water to grow, they will also be taught what they need to grow up to be healthy and strong individuals. The bookmarks are there to remind them of the importance of characters building.
Don't you think that is a marvelous green idea?
The art of recycling for a greener environment starts with seeing trash as "abandoned material" so that we can create "Abundance from the Abandoned" in "Amazing Ways".

Be a GIANT with small footprints?
I have written about using your fingers to teach to save usage of paper in a classroom environment and today I have another idea to share with you.
Did you notice the slides I have been using on my blog? You can easily find short and interesting slides on public domains to teach with. Here is one presentation on air pollution and...
...another on Plastic Pollution in Our Oceans
I discovered them from SlideShare.
If you are able to create your own PowerPoint slides about the environment, post them online for public viewing so that more people will be able to read about them. Also, when you save your work on the net, as long as you can go online, you can show your presentations wherever you may be.
You can also search for relevant videos from YouTube to present. Just learn to download them onto your notebook, computer or onto a hand-held disc storage.
Then instead of printing write outs for distribution, all you have to do is to provide links to the slides or videos you have shown. I am sure that if the children or adults have enjoyed them, they will be emailing these links to their friends.
When you work on spreading news about caring for our environment that way, you are able to reach a wider group of people. So, there you are, you can be a GIANT (spreading environmental information) with small footprints (to a large group of people).
And as you tread along, you will soon realise that you have also managed to turn your GIANT footprints small, carbonwise.

Green teaching aids? Found in fingers.
Paper is the most often used material in a classroom environment. You see paper in books, posters and notes. So, how can we reduce its usage and save some trees?
Look at your fingers and try moving the little finger. You will realised that your palm and the rest of your fingers will move along with it.

Move your index finger and you will notice that you have more control over the rest of your fingers and only your middle finger will move along with it.

The little finger is just like a child compared to the rest of the fingers. The palm represents the environment she is in. In her ignorance, her actions will affect more people in her environment. I see a strong figure in the index finger. Someone who is mature and more conscious about the effects her actions can create.
I see the ability of each finger to bend forward to touch the thumb. The thumb looks like someone of authority; a good support system to lead one on the right path.

Where do you stand where taking care of our environment is concerned? Do you want to be a little finger forever? Be a thumb. Show others how to make use of their ever ready fingers as teaching aid about keeping our environment green.
And if you are able to hold your audience's interest and have some time to spare, you can also talk about morality, with the help of your middle finger.
