Building characters with plants

Have you heard of Character Counts?

They have a very unique way of teaching the young about the importance of building good characters. This time they are teaching through a "Grow Your Character Bookmarks" science project.

In each bookmark there is a seed-embedded "pot" which the children can put in the soil to grow. The children involved will be given handouts showing the life cycle of a plant. There is also a table to print out to note down observations of the growth. This teaches children how to take responsibility of what they grow.

As the children learn through the experiment that plants need sunlight and water to grow, they will also be taught what they need to grow up to be healthy and strong individuals. The bookmarks are there to remind them of the importance of characters building.

Don't you think that is a marvelous green idea?

Can't afford to buy a gift?

Christmas is around the corner and you have lots of friends you would like to buy a gift for. What can you do if you can't afford it?

Start collecting raffia string and make your own friendship band to give away. Here are the instructions shared by Wynnie Kwok on SlideShare.

Frenship Band

You don't have to buy strings to create. Crafters can also use:

1) raffia strings taken off packed food
2) strings taken off paper bags
3) strings taken off bags of rice
4) strings from Chinese sausages (not for Malay friends though)

In Malaysia, if you take time to go to the market after closing hours, before the cleaners start clearing the place up, you will find lots of material to work with. Like the sacks used for storing potatoes and such.

ACT: Fight climate change with Zero Waste!

From My InBox:

Dear friends,

The nations of the world are preparing their strategies for the climate
change negotiations in Poznan, Poland. Few governments understand the
potential of Zero Waste as a solution to the climate change problem. It
is important that they hear from you -- governments should commit to
Zero Waste as part of their climate change obligations.

GAIA is asking its members and allies to take a few easy steps:

1. Sign the open letter to the world's governments at:
www.globalgaia.org/poznan

2. Send this message to your friends and allies!

3. Contact your government representative to the climate change
negotiations and ask for a meeting before they leave for Poland
(December 1). Your representative (called "national focal point") is here:
http://maindb.unfccc.int/public/nfp.pl

4. If you get a meeting, take the sign-on letter (I can provide you with
a complete list of signatories) and some of GAIA's literature and
explain why Zero Waste is an important strategy for climate change. If
you're not up to this, write me and I'll help you with the arguments!

5. Whether you get a meeting or not, hold a press conference and let the
world know!

For more on the connection between waste and climate change, see the
GAIA website at:

Thank you for all your good work!

Mansfield Middle School in Connecticut even has a website to teach what composting is about. It is also touches on the variety of micro organisms that are beneficial to get a compost pile going. I think it is a wonderful way to pick up biology.

And if you considering a Vermicompost or worm compost, the website of The Adventures of Herman the worm should be a fun way to generate an interest of students in school to start one.

Don't miss out the many other useful information that you can find on Urban Program Resource Network. If you go to "Just for Kids", you will find the link to the award winning program, "The Great Plant Escape", where children can help Detective LePlant find clues that will uncover the importance of plants in their life.

Here is a good video of how you can start one at home posted on YouTube by : Kitchen Gardeners International.

Don't waste the corporate gifts.

When the former company I worked for changed its name, we still had stock of corporate gifts printed in its former name. And if you have attended corporate events or exhibition, you would have noticed that you can collect quite a fair bit of corporate giveaways.

These items are usually have the corporate logo printed on them. What do you do with those that you don't need or won't use because of the ads or logos? Check this idea out for some inspirations.

Climate change and poverty

What has climate change got to do with poverty? Climate change can cause depletion of natural resources, such as, water which can affect soil fertility and this can reduce agricultural yields.

Less supply = Increase in price = Less wealth

Graffiti Is A Crime?

To many who have had their properties damaged by graffiti, it is indeed a crime to paint, mark, scratch, scrawl on properties that do not belong to you. It's vandalism!

But if we are to think along Newton's Third Law of Motion that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction, then the more appropriate statement to use should be:

"Graffiti is a crime if you don't see the social and political messages in them."

What were the reasons (actions)that initiated the graffiti (reactions)? If you see graffiti displaying the same messages everywhere you go it is likely that the issues have never been resolved.

Look at my graffiti. What are you going to do about it?

Why start a library?

I am helping out at a library for children in my community so I can appreciate these points shared by Damone Virgilio on SlideShare.

Most of the books we have in the library were donated by residents of the community whose children have outgrown the books they have collected. This beats recycling them for paper as there are children whose parents cannot afford to buy or are not keen to buy them books to read.

So before you throw away or recycle any books that you have, take a look at the points in the presentation and decide if donating them or starting a library with them would be a better option.

If you are thinking of starting your own library, look out for my presentation on how to set up a library with abandoned materials.

May those who help the most win

So, you want to do something for the environment? You do not have the capital to work on it? Here is your solution.

CNN reported that Google will be celebrating their 10th anniversary by giving away US$10 million in February 2009. To win at least US$2 million of that, you need to put on your thinking cap to figure out how to make our world a better place because Google will be picking at least 5 winning ideas.

You have till 20 October 2008 to submit your ideas to Google's Project 10 to the 100. Language should not be a problem as long as you know one of the 25 languages you can submit them in.

Remember that they only want your visionary ideas so just go ahead and submit your dreams even if you do not have the technical expertise to implement them. Let Google worry about that.

Here is a list of issues for you to work on:

* Community: How can we help connect people, build communities and protect unique cultures?
* Opportunity: How can we help people better provide for themselves and their families?
* Energy: How can we help move the world toward safe, clean, inexpensive energy?
* Environment: How can we help promote a cleaner and more sustainable global ecosystem?
* Health: How can we help individuals lead longer, healthier lives?
* Education: How can we help more people get more access to better education?
* Shelter: How can we help ensure that everyone has a safe place to live?
* Everything else: Sometimes the best ideas don't fit into any category at all.

100 semifinalists will be selected by January 27 and the public will get to vote for their favourite submission from January 27 to February 2. Only the top 20 ideas will be selected for review.

I have submitted my ideas for building communities. What would you work on? If you need some ideas check out some of the articles I have posted. One of the ideas Goggle appreciated runs along the idea of the PlayPump.

As Google said it, "May those who help the most win".

Making soft toys? Find free stuffing.

Does this look familiar to you?

They are the fibres removed from corns I have been eating.

They have dried up as I have kept them for a few weeks now. They still look good, doesn't smell and feel soft like cotton fillings for your pillows. If you keep enough, you can use them to stuff soft toys with.

Need pin cushion before you start? Need colour scheme to work on? I have that all covered, of course. Just click on the links for free tutorials.

You can also check out LiveJournal for some ideas of the kind of toys you would like to create. Just remember that the smaller your soft toy is, the more scrap fabrics you can use.

So, can you make a living making soft toys? Mariska did with her cute Fluffels...

and she is sweet enough to provide free tutorial on her blog for creating a Duck.

If you work on it, your profit is most likely higher since you use waste fibre from corn and scrap fabrics, right? Should you hide the fact that you are using waste material? Of course not! After all it may be the reason why they want to buy your toys.

There are people out there who just want to be owners of eco friendly creations.

Before you throw, remember this prayer.

We take things we have like food and water for granted. It used to be that we throw food only when it has gone bad. I remember my grandma removing a moldy part from a piece of bread before she ate it. So, I am comfortable doing the same.

You do not have throw away your loaf of bread on its expiry date if you keep them in the fridge before that date. You can fry french toast with them or put them in the toaster to heat up before eating.

Keep this prayer by Avalok that I discovered on Slideshare to remind you why you should not take good things we have for granted.

I do not have another place to go to if Earth is destroyed. Do you?

Food bits that should have been eaten.

Received this in my email today. It may change your mind about discarding those cut out bits and pieces of food.

==============================================================================
From My InBox:

When eating certain food, there are certain parts which seemingly are useless and should be thrown away. In reality, their nutritional value could be higher than the food itself. Check if you have unknowingly wasted these.

Fish Eyes

Fish eyes, especially markeral family, contain rich quantity of DHA and EPA which are very rare unsaturated fatty acid. The most beneficial property of these natural substances are their abilities to stimulate human brain cells, improve memory and thinking power, and also very helpful in preventing memory decline, high cholesteral and hypertemsion diseases. The common notion suggested that eating certain animal parts would strengthen similar body parts of ours, and this has also be proven correct by clinical experiment where fish eyes are concerned: They can help to reduce the deterioration of eyesight.

Fibers of orange or grapefruit peels

When eating oranges or grapefruits, after removing the peels, do not remove all the fibres that stuck on the fruits. In fact, the fibres contained certain vitamin known as 路丁 [(English term?)], which helps to maintain the elasticity and density of the artery wall, which in turn reduces the danger of bleeding especially the fine arteries. Hypertension patients usually have problem of brain haemorage while diabetic patients retina haemorage. For people with tendency to bleed, especially old people with tendency of artery hardening, eating fibres of oranges and frapefruit peels is particularly helpful.

Bones

The nutritional values of bones are higher than that of the meat. Comparing the nutritional values of Pork bones and pork, the bones contain far more protein, iron, sodium and calories than meat. Bones contain 23% more protein than milk powder, 61% more than beef, three time as much as pork and more than double that of eggs. It has abundance of essential minerals that human requires, like 磷脂質 that are needed by the brain, 磷蛋白, 蛋氨酸 for the liver, 氨基酸, vitamins A, B1 and B2, as well as 類粘朊 and 骨膠元 [bone gels?] that are useful for slowing the aging. The best part is, when boiled in soup, its nutritions become more readily absorbed by human body than plant-based food.

Chili Leaves

Chili leaves contains complete range of 蛋白氨基酸 [amino acid?]. almost 4 times compared to the chili fruits. It also contains more than double what chili fruits have of 元素硒 , which are anti-cancerous substance. On top of that, chili leaves are rich in calcium, beta carotene, various vitamins and other nutrients. Eating a suitable quantity of chili leaves enhances secreation of digestive juices, improves appetite and are good for indigestions, gastric and s tom ach discomfort. Regular intake of chili leaves also help in warming body, strengthen liver, improve eyesight, reduce weight and improve beauty. Chili leaves is tasty and can either be cooked alone, frying with meat or making soup.

Cool green designs

Check out these photos of innovative ideas I received in my mail today. If designers keep creating furnishings or gadgets on smaller scale, who needs a bigger home. Let's see what we can save with them.

Less material used = less energy to create = less wastage

Don't let the water drip away. Save it by placing it where the plant needs it.

Small = portable = need not buy for each room.

Don't have to turn on the bathroom or kitchen light with these on.

2-in-1 = one more (function) need less = less space required

I am sure there is less packaging required for these products and...

since they are space saving too, you can deliver more units and save cost on fuel.

Learn to fold for science and a living.

Do you know that learning to fold paper into forms and shapes can lead to the development of new technology? Do it well and it can even allow you to make a living out of it.

Don't believe me?

Then take a look at the props used in this advertisement for Lancer Endeavor.

That's a lot of origami=$ to create for a commercial and you can learn how to create complicated ones like that by checking out the links posted on Dr Robert J. Lang's website. Dr Lang is so good at it that he has even created a free software, TreeMaker, to create mathematical lines for folding origami. Note his copyright terms should you take up this challenge.

So, what has folding papers got to do with science? Hear it from Dr Lang himself in this video posted by Ted.Com on YouTube.

So, don't waste those scraps of paper. If you are not going to recycle them, learn to fold with them.
